Research abstract

Understanding small-scale turbulence patterns and lateral velocity gradients, which typically affects sound propagation, can help identify disturbances in the ocean caused by moving objects, aiding in strategic defense and offense. Direct measurement of ocean turbulence depends on sampling of quantities at length scales where universal scaling laws hold. Direct measurement of velocity fluctuations over this spatial range are exceedingly rare as most existing Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) sensors offer either a fixed volume or vertical profile of velocity. Triton Systems proposed a novel sensor technology that makes direct measurement of lateral velocity gradients over spatial range of order 1-10 meters. Triton solution is immune to the environmental effects; thus it can meet the required accuracy of this topic.
