Research abstract

IPITEK proposes to develop a novel dense vibration sensor array for structural health monitoring. This unique approach allows dynamic read-out and electronically reconfigurable sensor location with distributed fiber-optic sensors. The sensing approach isbased on modal interference in ordinary silica glass fiber. This approach allows determination of both location and magnitude of strain in the structure. IPITEK's approach is simple in design, durable, low cost, and applicable to structural healthmonitoring of new and aging aircraft. The feasibility of this approach was demonstrated in Phase I, and a prototype system will be developed and tested in Phase II. Also in Phase II software for data analysis and user-friendly readout will be developed. The prototype system will be suitable for transition to an active platform. Commercial applications include structural monitoring of pipelines, pressure vessels (e.g., boilers, chemical storage tanks), civil infrastructure (e.g., buildings, bridges, dams, power plants), and drilling operations. Benefits include failure prediction and lower maintenance/repair budgets.
