Research abstract

Pyrotechnic signal cartridges are used to mark the point of impact of practice bomb when simulating bomb drops for pilot training. The current practice bomb uses a pyrotechnic signal cartridge containing red phosphorous to produce smoke and flame for signaling. This design often causes fires and delays training under dry conditions. The S*R non-pyrotechnic signal cartridge design inherently eliminates the fire and environmental hazards of the current pyrotechnic cartridge. It also considerably simplifies the log istics of the practice bombs. The design uses a gas reservoir sealed by a rupture disc which is burs a firing pin to generate a shock wave. A reservoir of smoke powder is dispersed with the shock wave after the rupture disc is punctured, thus producing the smoke signal. Multiple color, environmentally safe smoke proposed. The flash is generated by a primer-initiated flashbulb. The S&R non-pyrotechnic desgin successfully meets the requirements of effectiveness, safety, efficient logistics, lower life cycle costs, and storage/handling concerns.
