Research abstract

Interactive map animation software on CD-ROM for multimedia computers will enable students to observe nation, language, and religion boundaries on a map background. Students will be able to select a global perspective or zoom-in for a regional view. During animation they will see nations changing, watch empires growing, observe peoples migrating, and witness languages or religions spreading. Users may pause at any year and compare concurrent developments in various countries or select a nation to view its complete history. A series of ready-to-use classroom presentations will employ map animation, narration, photographs, and original art to provide chronological overviews of individual standards defined in the National Standards for World History for Grades 5 to 12. For Example, Inc. has demonstrated preliminary map animations to educators and received enthusiastic support and suggestions which will be incorporated into the Phase I prototype.
