Research abstract

Understanding seabed sediments and their geotechnical/geoacoustic properties are key to advancing offshore infrastructure, anchoring, asset recovery, and acoustic propagation modeling. Existing sampling solutions require sensor deployment support and complicated post processing to produce results. New sensor technologies are needed that improve deployability and data availability in dynamic seabed environments. Triton Systems proposes to develop an in-situ seabed physical properties probe to provide rapid seabed and sub-surface sediment classification in a compact and easy-to-deploy form factor. Triton’s proposed sensor will be capable of sea and pore water parameters, sediment sound speed, undrained shear strength, cohesion, friction angle, and grain size estimates. Additional parameters are possible. The sensor package will be rated to operation in up to 4 km water depth and be deployable in an expendable or tethered fashion. Triton’s In-situ Seabed Physical Properties Probe (ISPPP) solution will provide rapid and unprecedented access to seabed property measurement and classification.
