Research abstract

65755 Recent efforts employing bioorganisms to remediate landfills contaminated with heavy metals and radionuclides are hampered by the innability to characterize the oxidation state of these contaminants. This project will develop technology for the rapid, in-situ, ppb detection, identification, and oxidation-state determination of heavy metals and radionuclides in contaminated waters (e.g. groundwater). This will be accomplished by integrating a new surface-enhanced Raman (SER) active sensor into a cone penetrometer for depth profiling or long-term monitoring of plumes. During Phase I, the sensor chemistry will be optimized to detect numerous liganded metal species (e.g. CrVI2O72-, FeIIEDTA2-, SrCO3). The ability of the sensor to perform reversible, reproducible, quantitative ppb detection will be evaluated. Feasibility will be demonstrated by comparing performance to previously analyzed samples. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: In addition to the groundwater application, the sensor should also benefit remediation efforts being performed at many of the 700 identified Superfund sites, as well as aid the characterization of public and private water supplies, underground aquifers, and coastal waters.
