Research abstract

Existing high Anti-Jam (AJ) GPS receivers for PGMs (e.g., Beamforming for Satellite Timing and Ranging, BEAMSTAR AJ GPS receiver) integrate several AJ techniques and are ideally suited for battlefield communications to PGMs. Typically, high AJ GPS receivers are multi-channel allowing simultaneous tracking of 5 or more Space Vehicles (SVs). Only 4 SVs are required to form a navigation solution. The additional channels may be utilized to produce an overdetermined navigation solution, or to collected ephemeris data from all satellites in view, or perform Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM), or to collect dual channel ionospheric corrections, or for communications (e.g., the FAA's Wide Area Augmentation System, WAAS). The AJ GPS receiver software could be extended to allow an excess channel(s) to receive retargeting information or differential corrections from the host aircraft. The inherent beamforming, null steering, and temporal nulling of jammers in each existing SV channel make the retargeting communications channel immune to ECM (i.e., jamming). Use of the excess AJ GPS receiver channel for communications makes the system commensurate with the basic AJ GPS channels so that it is applicable to the battlefield environment and it is nearly COTS.
