Research abstract

Dynetics proposes to develop lattice wing control surface concepts for application to aircraft towed maneuverable bodies. Lattice control surface designs will be developed to meet towed vehicle stability and control requirements, maneuverability requirements, drag requirements and storage/compatibility requirements. Dynetics will use existing aerodynamic prediction techniques it has previously developed and applied as the basis for designing and evaluating the aerodynamic characteristics of lattice control surface concepts. Design parameters which will be evaluated include control surface outer dimensions, cell spacing, frame cross section thickness and shape, control surface curvature and leading edge sweep angle. Experimental data, which have been previously obtained to identify and investigate some of the critical design parameters mentioned above, will also be used where applicable. Detailed finite element structural analyses will be conducted on the concepts which appear most promising to confirm the validity of their design. Dynetics will assess possible lattice control surface storage and deployment methods as part of the design development process. Concept designs developed during Phase I of this effort will provide the starting point for the Phase II development of a prototype lattice wing controlled body suitable for demonstration either in a wind tunnel or as a full-scale towed model. Anticipated Benefits/Potential Applications - Lattice wing control surface technology appears to be a highly efficient and effective means for controlling maneuverable towed platforms capable of carrying ECM equip- ment, missile warning systems or reconnaissance equipment. This technology also appears promising for application to submersible platforms and air launched smart weapons. Civilian uses of this technology include platforms carrying special sensors used for environmental research, natural resource management or drug smuggling surveillance.
