Research abstract

The Army Chemical Stockpile Disposal Program (CSDP) is charged withdestroying the nation's deteriorating stockpile of highly toxic chemicalagents and munitions. This has proven to be a technically challenging, lengthy (20 year projected effort) and costly ($15 billion and increasing)endeavor. Incineration technology is the basis for most of the chemicaldemilitarization activities. Improved incineration analysis and designtools can greatly assist the Army in accomplishing this task safely, efficiently and economically, while ensuring protection of public healthand the environment. In Phase I we have: obtained and used a full chemical mechanism for theGB simulant DMMP and showed by two methods the destruction of DMMP wascomplete and extremely rapid in a liquid incinerator and a metals partsfurnace; constructed and exercised four CFD models of incineratorcomponents; and demonstrated these models are useful for exploringscenarios relevant to chemical demilitarization incinerator operation. In Phase II we will: identify chemical mechanisms for GB & VX nerveagents and mustard that allow the identification of PICs; extend thecapability of existing CFD modules for transient operation and developother modules; benchmark the incinerator models; and demonstratethe utility of an engineering design workbench to improveincinerator performance.
