Research abstract

AeroChem Corp. proposes to develop an optical system for full-field pressure measurements. Our system will be a significant improvement over existing Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) systems. It will be capable of unsteady pressure measurements for both periodic and short duration transient conditions. Aerochem's system will also be self-compensating for temperature variations, will simultaneously measure pressure and temperature, and will be self-referencing for nonuniform illumination and model deformation/movement. During Phase I, we will develop and demonstrate a limited capability system under conditions found in ground testing of tactical missiles, UAV's and helicopters. We will also demonstrate the relative capabilities of a single-lumiphore versus a multi-lumiphore system. During Phase II we will develop and fabricate a complete functioning system for demonstration in a ground test facility. Results from this work will lead to full-field measurements of unsteady pressures. This will have a strong impact on the design and testing of various aerospace vehicles and devices. Propulsion and automotive applications are also probable. Spin-off technologies include remote sensing of oxygen concentration in medical and environmental applications.
