Research abstract
In the battlefield, 10% of the injuries are of the eyes and appropriate treatment requires immediate evaluation by ophthalmic specialists. It is the objective of this program to develop a non-mydriatic, hand-held, ophthalmic imaging system for use by forward medical personnel. It would be fully digital and easy to use and would be provided with communications capability to transmit the images and other clinical data and receive treatment recommendations from rear eschalon physicians. Additionally, the camera would image external injuries, providing a wider return on the investment. This user friendly diagnostic system would additionally be provided with the capability of performing other visual tests such as acuity and would find widespread use in Telemedicine throughout the military civilian medical care systems. The system as currently envisioned would be provided in three units. They are the Digital Processing Unit (portable computer and communication module); the Wide-Field Image Capture Unit (a derivative of the Company's existing mydriatic wide-field camera and providing 120 degrees of retinal imaging); and the General Ophthalmic Diagnostic Unit (45 degrees of imaging and general ophthalmic diagnostics in one unit). There will be a tremendous reduction in costs for field ocular medicine in both the military and civilian sectors and this will be accomplished by a reduction in costs. This will be the key in enabling technology for Telemedicine in ophthalmology.
