Research abstract
Not Available This program will develop and demonstrate a new Hybrid Detector for obtaining high resolution x-ray images at 300-450 kV energies for use in 2-D and 3-D (cone-beam) computed tomography. The Hybrid Detector concept will provide detection efficiencies 5-7 times greater than conventional lens coupled scintillator designs. Greater efficiency and modular design will lead to improved system throughput and resolution accompanied by reduced system design and fabrication costs. The Phase I program will optimize and evaluate optical coupling components and model scintillator performance to optimize system performance for damage assessment and characterization, for metrology and for rapid prototyping. The Phase I Option program will experimentally evaluate the performance of candidate scintillators to complete the design concept, to validate the system performance projections and to prepare for phase II fabrication of a system which incorporates and demonstrates the proposed concept. BENEFITS: Significant improvements in the price and performance of 3-D CT instruments will dramatically increase the accessible market for 3-D metrology of as- built objects and rapid prototyping of sculpted models and parts lacking accurate drawings.
