Research abstract

40081 November 8, 1996 Mandall Armor Design & Mfg., Inc. Department of Energy facilities require effective and affordable activated barrier systems with features that are not presently available: low maintenance, long service life, robust broad spectrum resistance to all known attack techniques, passive activation, and non-lethal performance. This project will develop and test key elements of a non-lethal, personnel activated barrier system concept. The approach includes simple and inexpensive construction, capability of retrofit into existing facilities, and multiple levels of protection available in upgradeable modular construction units. Phase I includes definition of all system components and their capabilities within the system, generation of basic test data relating to the various attack techniques, and field testing and analysis of the sample components. Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications as described by the awardee: The barrier system should be confirmed as effective, practical, and affordable for the protection of special nuclear material and related items, with levels of protection exceeding all GSA requirements. The commercial applications of this system are numerous, as it is both effective and affordable for enhanced protection of critical items.
