Research abstract

During the Phase I of this project, the basic principles of the dynamic sandtable have been successively demonstrated. The prototype met all the specifications. During the Phase II, the design will be refined to make it more readily manufacturable andto reduce the cost. Attention will be given to the reliability and maintainability. During the first year, a module having a write area of more than eight square feet will be designed and constructed. During the second year, four of these modules willbe fitted together to form a dynamic sandtable having an area of greater than thirty-two square feet. The sandtable will be capable of writing a complete 3-dimentional topographical map in less than one minute.Xenotran anticipates that the Phase II sand table will benefit a variety of applications. Xenotran's sand table will provide a durable and reprogrammable medium for industrial applications such as rapid prototyping of molds. It will also provide fast andaccurate models for emergency situations, such as a military crisis or a natural disaster, as well as for recreational applications, such as golf or ski course modeling, marketing real estate, billboards/attractions, and surveying of land and water.
