Research abstract

40768 November 13, 1996 T/J Technologies Significant performance advantages can be realized by using ultracapacitors (capacitors with extremely high power densities) to level battery loads in automotive applications. In this project, ultacapacitor electrodes will be constructed electrochemically from ceramic electrode materials. These materials will significantly enhance the volumetric energy storage density and reduce the electrode cost relative to existing ultracapacitors. In Phase I, test cells will be assembled for the purpose of evaluating electrode films and developing a relationship between electrode film performance and microstructure. The electrode performance evaluation will measure electrochemical stability, specific capacitance, and frequency response. Phase II will optimize the deposition process, develop additional post-processing steps to further enhance performance, build prototype devices, and evaluate the critical parameters: energy density, power density, equivalent series resistance, leakage current, temperature dependence, and cycle life. Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications as described by the awardee: New non-oxide ceramic electrodes should increase the power and energy densities of ultracapacitors. This will enable ultracapacitors to be used in hybrid electric vehicles. The projected $1B market for ultracapacitors also includes applications in conventional motor vehicles, portable power tools, medical devices, and uninterruptible power supplies.
