Research abstract

79373S Today, scientific endeavors are increasingly being pursued by large-scale collaborative research teams that jointly investigate areas, such as, computational climate modeling, nano-scale science (both experimental and computational), and high-energy physics. The shared use of high-bandwidth, multi-protocol network connections is accompanied by a need for high throughput, large-data traffic, and low latency control traffic. This project will develop and implement techniques to enable the efficient end-to-end use of multi-protocol network connections, including existing IP-based networks and emerging optical standards. In particular, ¿middleware overlays¿ and ¿system-level software¿ will be developed for bridging Internet-based networks with lambda-based networks. Since the availability of lambda networks cannot be predicted, Phase I will demonstrate feasibility of the bridge by using emerging high-speed networks such as InfiniBand. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The bridging technology should benefit scientists in the national laboratories and researchers in around the world that are working on various large-scale modeling and simulation problems.
