Research abstract
Not Available Physical Optics Corporation (POC) proposes to develop an advanced high efficiency, frequency selective acoustic bandgap composite (ABC) structure based on volume holography, in which characteristic acoustic impedance mismatch Bragg regions can be precisely designed to reflect specific portion of the impinging acoustic and vibration frequency. This ABC structure will be fabricated using the solid freeform fabrication (SFF) process, which can build complex 3-D Bragg holographic geometries with very small internal microcavities (i.e., resolution), allowing immediate application of previously developed POC multilayer photonic bandgap and Bragg reflection holographic technologies. In Phase I, POC will determine the best combination of available materials, multilayer Bragg structure and process parameters to produce the ABC structure for frequency selective, high efficiency filtering of acoustic waves. The selected process will be used to produce bandgap composite structure samples, which will be characterized for their frequency damping (to reflect above 5,000 Hz) and mechanical properties. Since ABC structures can be fabricated on the SFF machinery used for rapid prototyping, it is highly mass producible and will have a commercial potential.
