Research abstract
Handheld portable millimeter wave concealed weapon detector operating at 94 GHz or higher frequency is proposed for commercial unit development. Feasibility of radar imaging at close distances of handguns with excellent image picture before enhancement has been achieved by us using very small size antenna. Very low emitted power ensures safety of a person under scan. Operation with rechargeable battery, the CHANG-SCAN unit is envisioned to shape like a flash light. The unit has the potential of detecting concealed explosives. Penetrating leather and heavy clothing, the radar imaging technique is considered superior compared with millimeter wave passive imaging technique such as the tripod-mounted detector by Millitech. Our portable unit can also be used to detect objects inside a suitcase with a high range resolution waveform to avoid detecting the surface of the briefcase. Our portable unit should be useful to detect objects behind a wall. Anticipated Benefits: Military benefits: can be adapted for buried mine detection. Special Operation Force weapon Search. Commercial Applications: Airport safety, school safety, concealed object detection such as by law/drug enforcement agencies. The Portable handheld unit can operate at any place at any time contrary to fixed or tripod-mounted unit.
