Research abstract
The purpose of this project is to develop a combined database and analytical model which can predict the likelihood of sediment type, depth (and other factors) at a specified location on any coastline in the world, given the geographic location and certain geomorphic and oceanographic data about the site. The database would be composed of four elements: 0 a digital global coastal chart file; 0 global coastal forms (geomorphological) classification; 0 a global database of relevant oceanographic parameters, such as tides, wind, sea state, water depths, sediment types, sea level changes, and climate/ temperature, and 0 a remote sensing satellite image and analysis data file. The analytical model would consist of a GIS/remote sensing module which would be capable of overlaying various charts and imagery and integrating it with reference tables and an expert system to develop graphic outputs of coastal charts, coastal profiles, and sediment types along with their engineering properties. This Phase I effort will focus upon assessment of available data and software, development of the conceptual system design, and demonstration of principles at a few diverse geomorphic settings in Florida.
