Research abstract
We propose to investigate and demonstrate the feasibility of spatial spectral interferometer (SSI), multi-aperture interferometer (MAI), and continuous mirror telescope (CMT) sensors capable of supporting real-time, high-resolution, Earth-viewing, satellite imaging systems. For these sensor classes, we propose to estimate optical and mechanical performance, define and apply a figure of merit, select the best sensor concept, and design Phase II experiments and prototype development plans for the best concept. In our approach we will: simulate sensor images using validated image processing algorithms; assess sensor performance to detect changes in prior images; examine trial launch and deployment approaches for low, medium, and high altitude satellites; and for defining the figure of merit, model relationships between sensor configuration parameters and derive weighing functions and boundaries for the parameters. We investigate these sensor classes because: the CMT provides a baseline to reference performance and competitive merit, model relationships between sensors configuration parameters and derive weighing functions and boundaries for the parameters.
