Research abstract

A proposal is presented for the preliminary design, component identification, and material selection needed to fabricate, test and validate the performance of an innovative diesel generator set based on the patented Rorary-Piston heavy fuel engine using Variable Speed Constant Frequency (VSCF) technology. The basis of the innovation centers on the application of the latest technological advances in both high speed diesel engine design and permanent magnet AC power generator. The Rotary-Piston combusiton-ignition engine design uses six double-ended pistons have centrally located drive pins reciprocating the pistons twice per revolution, providing the equivalent of a 12-cylinder 4-stroke having a mere seven moving parts and delivering power-to-weight ratios exceeding 1:1. Incorporating this high speed drive unit with the latest developments in mechanical and electronic VSCF technolgy will allow government platforms to replace gasoline-powered gensets with safer, less-volatile diesel units without sacrificing protability or specific fuel consumption performance. Numerous commercial applications will also benefit from development of an ultrlite diesel genset, including marine, aviation, construction and recreation. The proposed Phase I research effort will perform preliminary design and provide proof of concept through the development of a test-stand prototype to evaluate drive unit performance and VSCF integration. results will be compared with state-of-the-art genset capability and estimated cost of production to determine the significance of the innovation.
