Research abstract
65499 Although carbon nanotubes have found many applications since its recent discovery, its high cost makes most applications impractical. Catalytic pyrolysis is a potential technique for the mass production of carbon nanotubes at low cast; however, this method requires an advanced inexpensive catalyst that would allow a high conversion ratio for the carbon nanotube under less demanding processing conditions. This project will identify such high efficient catalysts for catalytic pyrolysis production in order to cut the current production cost of carbon nanotubes by three orders of magnitude. Phase I, will utilize high throughput screening to systematically study over 10,000 complex alloy catalyst compositions from 15 metals. The most efficient and low cost complex alloy catalyst will be selected for a carbon nanotube manufacturing process that will be developed in Phase II. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: Carbon nanotubes have been identified as a superior electric conductive filler material that does not affect the mechanical properties of plastic composites. Carbon nanotubes should also find application as reinforcing fillers for general composite materials in the manufacturing industry.
