Research abstract

Dynamics Technology, Inc. (DTI) will develop and validate a combined MAD/ELFE detector for airborne submarine search and tracking to support the Multi-Mode Magnetic Detection System (MMMDS). The new detector will fully integrate with the onboard noisemitigation processor.DTI has based the detector development and fusion on ELFDET, a prototype DTI processor developed under separate contract. ELFDET contains, or can accommodate, all the necessary components (noise reduction, MAD, ELFE) for a combined detector. In thiscontract DTI will focus upon generalization of the detector for ELFE signatures and integrating it with noise mitigation algorithms and MAD detection. The detector utilizes ELFE and MAD basis functions in a matched field type detection algorithm. The basisfunction approach will be generalized to take better advantage of the signature characteristics and fully integrate estimates of noise covariance. The algorithm will be implemented for both total field magnetometer and magnetic gradiometer data. Thecombined detector and noise reduction algorithms will be evaluated against flight data to be collected during the second year of the contract. The results of the proposed effort will significantly enhance the Navy's ability to upgrade the existing airborneMAD system. MAD has been identified as a necessary technology for the Navy's shallow water ASW program (SWALAS) and is now an FNC. The primary customers for advanced MAD system are the U.S. Navy and our allies. DTI is teamed with sensor and platformpartners for commercial production of the next generation system.
