Research abstract
The dolphin has a unique sonar capability by which it produces high-frequency clicks. The dolphin is able to vary both the frequency content and the repetition rate of the echolocation clicks. The goal of the combined Phase I and Phase II project is to model the dolphin sonar and to design, construct, and build a sonar system capable of mimicking the dolphin's behavior and ultimately to use this device to simulate the dolphin's ability to recognize objects. To facilitate this effort the Phase I approach will consist of identifying various technical concepts(s) identified in the Phase I work plan, analyzing and evaluating the expected performance of each identified concept, developing the best approach(es) into a detailed conceptual design and finally presentation of a concise, written report. Fabrication and all laboratory and field testing of the prototype design will be completed during the Phase II effort. Anticipated Benefits: The potential uses of the technology developed in this SBIR effort lie in both military (mine warfare and detection, current sonar system improvement, etc.) and commercial (image processing, aquaculture [biomass counting] etc.) applications.
