Research abstract
The objective of this proposal is to determine the chemical operating parameters and control parameters required to design a Neutral Precipitation/Cross Flow MicroFiltration wastewater treatment unit for removal of heavy metals from wastewater generated in the metal finishing operations generated at Department of Defense arsenals and depots. The proposed wastewater treatment process would permit treatment of the wastewater to much better effluent quality than conventional chromium reduction/metal precipitation processes, while reducing the chemical operting costs and the sludge production. The sodium Sulfide/Ferrous Sulfate chromium reduction neutral metal precipitation process, is an Air Force patented process which has been demenstrated in an existing Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant at Tinker AFB, OK. Implementation of the process resulted in an 80 percent reduction in sludge generation and 40 percent reduction in chemical usage. Environmental Research and Development, Inc. has an exclusive license to the process. The proposed treatment process would couple this chromium reduction/metal precipitation process to a Cross Flow MicroFiltration solids removal unit. This proposal describes the Tasks required to determine the operating parameters, the control parameters, and the system design.
