Research abstract
Regardless of the final choice of magnet technology and optics layout, most collider schemes will have a finite crossing angle with which bunches collide, resulting in a reduction in luminosity. It is accepted in the community that crab cavities can be developed to reduce this relative angle and increase the luminosity. Therefore, this project will develop a prototype 800 MHz crab cavity, fabricate the cavity, and test it at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The prototype would then be used to test and validate a variety of configuration, design, and fabrication concepts. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee Crab cavities are important for luminosity enhancements in high-energy physics machines such as the LHC and ILC, for nuclear physics machines such as the future electron-ion colliders, and for basic energy science for the production of ultra-short synchrotron radiation pulses in existing storage rings
