Research abstract
Not Available The US military has need for a Fast Pattern Recognizer (FPR) System for guided cruise missile applications to autonomously detect, identify, correlate, and track complex mobile military targets in hostile, high-clutter environments in real time. Similar real-time needs exist in commercial applications for image correlation, identification, and recognition for law enforcement, medical, security, product assurance, and other imaging applications. Since image correlation is computationally intensive, real-time processing must be accomplished by means other than available traditional hardware and/or software. The proposed FPR system easily accomplishes this task with rated processing speeds equivalent to 250_600 MHz Pentium III PC's. During Phase II, this speed will be increased an order of magnitude to the equivalent of 2500_600MHz Pentium III PC's by implementing the FPR as an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chip-set in a multi-chip module (MCM) that is less than two inches square. The latter version will offer additional benefits in reduced power, size, weight, and cost while increasing circuit density, processing power, and throughput rates for virtually all image-processing applications. The FPR module is hosted as a Pentium PC peripheral processor with all the benefits of standard PC operating system, software and hardware.
