Research abstract

This project will develop highly-insulating, compressive-resistant, adhesive-backed thermal insulation materials, suitable for installation in building construction locations that cannot use existing insulation materials. This compressive resistant material will be used to increase insulating values in buildings by offering an opportunity to install thermal breaks. In Phase I, typical compressive load values for selected installation locations will be gathered, via research and actual testing. A table summarizing the data will be generated to identify locations at which the insulation can provide the greatest value. Based on this data, targets for the compressive load strength and insulation performance will be identified. The effect of modifying the insulation blanket by changes in the density, reinforcement, or additives will be evaluated. Additionally, an initial evaluation of the effects of slit width and a pressure sensitive adhesive backing will be conducted. In Phase II, the formulations developed in Phase I will be scaled up into pilot scale production quantities, and a further evaluation of adhesion methods and slit widths will be conducted. Qualification testing for installation in the building industry will be accomplished, and information and plans for packaging and handling will be generated. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The new insulation materials should attract a large portfolio of commercial applications in both residential and commercial settings. The material should be suitable for use in any condition that requires compression-resistant insulation materials, and would have added value where space or space savings are at a premium.
