Research abstract

Simulation-based exercises offer a cost-efficient and effective method of training as opposed to live exercise participation. The use of simulation provides the advantage of capturing and analyzing consequences of decisions made by crisis management personnel. With a growing need for more simulation-based exercises, there is a corresponding need to develop scenarios quickly and easily. The critical problem is to allow the training staff to rapidly develop and change scenarios with little dependence on the software engineering staff. We propose an innovative solution that graphically allows trainers to build scenario scripts from a large, constantly growing repository of scenario building blocks. These building blocks will have embedded intelligence and are self-assessing, allowing for the prompt development of scenarios of any level of complexity and providing immediate feedback. Scenarios can be continually modified and analyzed using intuitive visual tools, without ever involving the software staff. Our innovation will operate as an executive agent to automate the generation of scenario scripts and facilitate interfacing with existing training systems through a system of protocol translators. The intelligent scenario builder will greatly reduce the time and staff needed to develop and modify scenarios, while leveraging existing training systems and generating meaningful feedback to scenario participants.
