Research abstract

This Small Business Innovation Research Phase I project is a 6 DOF tracking device for virtual environment applications based on a patented wireless positioning technology. Realization of such a system will provide a fast, accurate and long range HMD tracker to meet military training demand. The objective of Phase I is to demonstrate technical feasibility of such a system, and to lay solid ground for building a prototype model in Phase II. The proposed system consists of three portable signal transmitters mounted on a helmet, and at least four relay stations in a 3D coordinate system. RF signals emitted from the portable signal transmitters are received by the stations. The position and orientation of the helmet are then determined by TDOA and dynamic calibration method. The proposed system is expected to have wide applications virtual reality and other HMDs.
