Research abstract

One of the challenges associated with transitioning our nation¿s transportation economy to any alternative fuel is the fuel delivery strategy. In the case of hydrogen as a transportation fuel, the network of fueling stations may include a combination of centralized and de-centralized fuel production. One of the most attractive ways to implement a home hydrogen fueling station is the proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis hydrogen generator. PEM technology offers the potential for hydrogen fuel to be generated at 5,000 psi, with zero mechanical compression, to directly fuel a vehicle at home in the user¿s garage. This project will adapt an existing high pressure electrolyzer design for use as a home hydrogen fueling appliance. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The high pressure electrolyzer should be of value to any hydrogen energy storage application that requires a small storage footprint and high energy efficiency. In addition to vehicle fueling, the high pressure electrolyzer should be applicable to stationary systems used for backup power and renewable energy storage.
