Research abstract

Situation awareness (SA) is critical to effective performance for Army forces conducting MOUT missions. In that the Army wishes to train soldiers in small unit operations to have high levels of SA, this Phase II SBIR will develop and validate anintegrated SA measurement system. This SA measurement battery will allow researchers to evaluate the effectiveness of different apporaches to training SA and will provide critical feedback on soldier SA to be used in the training process. The mostimmediate commercialization potentials for the new comprehensive measurement system in (virtual) training applications include:1. Other government agencies such as Air Force, Navy and the Marines who are also very interested in being able to train SA in simulation environments.2. Public safety officer emergency operations training, 3. State/federal crime scene investigators, and 4. Tactical military/defense support teams training training. These types of units might train for such small-scale operations in high-fidelity VRscenarios. For these organizations, the safety of their personnel, and those they support in service in highly varied and critical situations, is dependent on a rapid assessment of and understanding of the situation. The SA measurement product(s)developed through this SBIR should be applicable to these organizations following some modifications for task/domain differences.
