Research abstract
This Phase I effort will design a highly integrated communication system featuring; virtual connectivity over multiple communication media, demand multiplexing of multiple information sources, voice, video, image and data I/O, user pull access to information, encryption, data compression, ATM network interfacing, rmote access via a broadband LAN, a broad range of computing platforms and ocnfigurations (including mobile) and multi-taksing of DOS and Unix applications along side communication functions. CNR's SURENET (TM) hgih performance communication products already offer some of these features. The SURENET products achieve these capabilities by combining commercial off the shelf components and innovative technology developed control technique which maximizes throughput while guaranteeing error-free data transfer on any communication media. An innovative robust packet routing approach, employing fuzzy logic and hybrid source/hop routing, is also proposed. Under the Phase I effort, a family of system designs based on modular hardware and software components will be produced. This family will encompass configurations ranging from a notebook PC netowrk entry point to a multi-workstation network hub. Key technologies will be demonstrated.
