Research abstract
Not Available Threat minimization is a major issue for law enforcement and defense personnel. Remote target detection, identification, and aimpoint selection for light weapons plays an important role in the engagement of hostile forces and dynamic entry, especially where the target views are restricted or low visibility conditions prevail (e.g. fires, obscurants, fog). Devices that are compact and portable enough to meet some of these objectives exist. However, they lack covert operation capability and their performance may be compromised by operation in total darkness or very low visibility scenarios. Coherent Technologies, Inc. (CTI) proposes to develop an eyesafe precision targeting system operating near 4UM wavelength in the midwave-IR (MWIR) for weapons such as the M-4 and MP5. The proposed device utilizes an all-solid state laser in a compact, battery ¿operated configuration. The selected wavelength penetrates dense obscurants and cannot be easily detected by opponents. This lightweight device provides target ID and aimpoint selection with t he aid of a matching MWIR imaging camera. In Phase I, CTI will design and demonstrate a MWIR laser source/imager for aimpoint selection. In Phase II, a compact, rugged, gun-mounted unit will be developed.
