Research abstract

Under the Phase I SBIR effort, NAVSYS developed a design for a networked GPS SIGINT sensor architecture using Software Radio signal processing to perform GPS navigation and also to geolocate GPS interference sources. This effort demonstrated thecapability to leverage next generation Software Radios being purchased by the US Army, such as the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS).Under Phase II, we propose to develop a prototype Software GPS Radio (SGR) suitable for transition into the JTRS Software Communication Architecture (SCA). This will perform GPS waveform processing to support both navigation and jammer geolocationfunctions using the software radio architecture The performance of this prototype SGR in supporting the JTRS navigation and timing requirements and acting as a GPS SIGINT sensor will be demonstrated. In Phase-III, we plan to transition the SGR softwareinto an SCA compliant GPS Waveform for use in JTRS.Currently the JTRS program plans to use a GPS SAASM module to provide navigation and timing information. This is an expensive additional component and, due to size, weight and power constraints, cannot be embedded into the JTRS Cluster-2 hand-held radios. The SGR approach provides a cost effective, low power solution to implement GPS with the JTRS and has the additional benefit of enhancing GPS protection through the networked software SIGINT function. Commercial applications exist for this capability, embedded into personal communication systems, for geolocation of interference sources and also personal geolocation in support of mobile E-9-1-1 applications.
