Research abstract
Photonic Power Systems, Inc. manufactures and sells GaAs power converters and fiber optically driven power and data modules. The project proposed herin will extend our present capabilities from our single device low power product line to a re-designed high power converter packaged in an expandable format and provided with an enclosure. Power provided from the module will be at least 10 watts and will be available at 5, 10, 15, 20, ro 25 volts. The new design will also provide an expandable data transmission module for one or more sensors. The entire product will measure 3"x4"x6" orless. This SBIR project will allow the designing and prototyping of one isolated power and data module (IPDM) capable of providing 10 watts at 2 km and one data transmission return fiber link. A technical report will also be delivered. The report will include an analysis of product performance and a cost analysis for its manufacture. Anticipated Benefits: Isolated power at a high voltage is useful for operating remotely located equipment in electric power transmission and distribution, process control and aerospace applications. It is also useful for powering sensors and control systems in hazardous environments. Specific commercial fields of application include mining, oil and gas exploration as well as fiber optic telecommunications equipment.
