Research abstract

41418 November 20, 1996 Princeton Electronic Systems, Inc. There is a growing need to develop image data link capabilities for real time still frame imagery and video transmission. This project will develop a high speed transmission and reception system for image transmission through satellite links. The work builds on current efforts to develop portable instruments for the transmission of still frame imagery over narrow band links. This project will develop techniques for real-time video transmission using wavelet techniques by adding Features such as temporal redundancy between successive frames and improved transmission protocols for error correction will be added, and higher speed hardware will be developed. A wavelet based algorithm will be developed for use in the real-time transmission of imagery over narrow band links. Incorporation of new chips using wavelets for image compression in the hardware system will increase the image processing speed to video transmission levels. In Phase II, a prototype system with the capability of real-time or near real-time video transmission will be developed. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: In addition to meeting the Department of Energy¿s needs, an effective low cost video transmission system can be used for video teleconferencing, multimedia transmission, satellite, radio and cellular phone based imagery transmission.
