Research abstract

The objective of this work is to develop an analytic tool which can predict the likelihood of sediment type and depth at any specified coastline location in the world, based on satellite imagery and internal databases of historic regional geologic data. The innovation is a unique combination of a relational database and geomorphological models, embedded in a simple menu-driven Graphical User Interface (GUI). The software will be developed by a partnership between Dynamics Technology, Inc. with ocean physics, software development, and remote sensing expertise, and Earth Satellite Corporation, with remote sensing, geology, and geomorphology expertise. Phase I of this work will be a feasibility study for the proposed site selection tool, including an assessment of existing satellite sensors and imagery, available archival imagery, global geomorphological databases, satellite revisit times, resolution, and physical suitability of collecting requisite environmental data. Phase I shall also include an analysis of the maximum likelihood of accurately estimating sediment type & depth at coastal'locations across the world based on correlations of observed land form and ocean pattern data with the maximum likelihood sediment characteristics. Phase II of this work shall be the development of the prototype desktop software tool.
