Research abstract

HAZARDOUS, TOXIC ORGANICS ARE PRESENT IN THE WASTE STREAMS OF MANY INDUSTRIES SUCH AS TEXTILE, PETROLEUM REFINING, PULP AND PAPER AND ORGANIC CHEMICAL MANUFACTURING. THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA) HAS ISSUED STRICTER REGULATIONS REGARDING WATER POLLUTION, REQUIRING INDUSTRY TOFIND NEW METHODS FOR ELIMINATION OF THE ORGANICS NOW PRESENT IN THEIR WASTE STREAMS. PRESENT METHODS WHICH ARE AVAILABLE EITHER DO NOT MEET THIS NEED OR CREATE SOLID WASTES WHICH IN TURN NEED TO BE DISPOSED OF. THE ELECTROCHEMICAL DESTRUCTION OF ORGANIC POLLUTANTS IN WASTEWATER, USING HIGH OVERVOLTAGE ANODES AS DESCRIBED IN THE PHASE I RESEARCH PROPOSAL WILL PROVIDE AN EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE TO CONVENTIONAL EFFLUENT TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES.
