Research abstract
75770-A future lepton collider involving muons, rather than electrons, would require a complement of high-power radio frequency (rf) amplifiers that are not currently available from any commercial source. Amongst these is an 800 MHz amplifier to furnish peak power greater than 100 MW in 10 microsecond pulses at a 15 Hz pulse repetition rate. This project will develop a pulsed magnicon at 800 MHz for the muon collider application, due to its advantages of a smaller physical footprint and higher efficiency. The work will be based on experience with similar amplifiers in the frequency range between 915 MHz and 34.3 GHz. Numerical simulations using proven computer codes will be employed for the conceptual design, which will include a design for a 200 MW diode electron gun; design of the magnet system; optimization of beam dynamics, including space charge effects in the transient and steady-state regimes; design of the drive, gain, and output cavities, including an rf choke in the beam exit aperture; analysis of parasitic oscillations and a means to eliminate them; and design of a beam collector capable of 20 kW average power operation. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The design and operation of the magnicon amplifier for the muon collider application would establish the device¿s credentials for a variety of accelerator applications, as well as for military and commercial applications that require high peak rf powers.
