Research abstract

Traditionally, simulation and training systems have been focused on terrain that are open and vast, representing desert regions and other areas of conflict. However, as urban areas have increasingly becoming sites of conflict throughout the world, and areexpected to remain so in the near future, new approaches to simulation and training are being considered. The complexities of the urban environment such as line-of-sight restrictions, inherent fortifications, limited intelligence, densely constructedareas and the presence of noncombatants restricts our current military technology. Specifically, the density and complexity of the database that represent such environments places increased demands on the performance of the runtime systems that use them.Secondly, the ability to create accurate 3D representations of the detailed urban environment can often prove unrealistic with today's tools and processes. The goal of this SBIR is to develop new tools and process for creating and rendering detailed urban databases in support of improved training for soldiers.
