Research abstract

Computing and communications requirements to support modern C4I systems have undergone considerable expansion in the last decade. Requirements for C4I interoperability between the services, along with recent developments in C4I doctrine (such as C4I for the Warrior) will require far more sophisticated, more complex, and more heterogeneous computing and communications technology. Effective design and optimization of such complex systems to meet C4I performance requirements poses a significant challenge and is of special interest to USAF organizations such as SSC/ENEB and ESC/XR. Event-driven performance simulation provides detailed, quantitative evaluation beginning early in the development life cycle. Performance simulation examines the ability of the computing and communications hardware to support computational loading, message traffic, data latency, and other mission performance requirements. OTI proposes the development of a C4I Distributed Performance Simulation Environment (C4I-DPSE) that will enable C4I system architects to fully exploit simulation as a cost-effective tool for predicting the performance of C4I systems. C4I-DPSE will be an innovative, state-of-the-art environment for simulating high-performance, distributed computer systems on distributed/parallel computing systems. OTI's proposed simulation environment will employ optimistic distributed simulation techniques such as Time Warp, as well as other innovative approaches to distributed computing.
