Research abstract

A MATHEMATICS TEXTBOOK PUBLISHER IS DEVELOPING A NEW SERIES BASED ON THE NCTM STANDARDS AND CALIFORNIA MATHEMATICS FRAMEWORK. THE SERIES ENCOURAGES THEME-BASED PROJECTS, INVESTIGATIONS, AND HANDS-ON MATHEMATICS, AND OFFERS NEW PROMISE FOR IMPROVING MATHEMATICS. RESEARCHERS ARE CONSULTING WITH THIS PUBLISHER ON DESIGN OF MULTIMEDIA MATERIALS FOR THE SERIES; AND ALSO WITH A COMPUTER COMPANY FOR DESIGNING SIMULATION ENVIRONMENTS FOR POWERFUL NEW, LOW-COST COMPUTERS. INVESTIGATORS ARE EXPLORING ISSUES RELATED TO THE DESIGN OF MATHEMATICS LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS: AGE-APPROPRIATE INTERFACES, INTEGRATING COMPUTER ANIMATION WITH VIDEO CLIPS, ACHIEVING REAL-TIME INTERACTIVITY, AND COSTS FOR PROGRAMMING.
