Research abstract

Quiet, compact and low cost power and environmental control systems are needed for command and control shelters. Altex has identified the Altex Compact Trigeneration System (ACTS) concept that utilizes novel power source and cooling technologies that canquietly power, and cool or heat shelters. In addition, the system has lower emissions, footprint and costs than existing diesel generators and cooling systems. Under the proposed Phase I effort, Altex, California State University Long Beach and FloridaTurbine Technologies, Inc., will work together to define and design an optimal ACTS system. As part of this effort, system process conditions and diagrams will be created. Also, system components will be investigated to increase confidence in ACTSperformance projections. In addition component performance risks will be identified and strategies developed to mitigate risks. At the conclusion of the effort, detailed drawings will be prepared along with a final report that documents all projectresults. A successful demonstration of ACTS will result in the availability of a military trigeneration system that will support the power and heating or cooling needs of command and control shelters. Besides reducing power and cooling cooling systemweight, size and fuel use, ACTS will reduce noise and emissions that make current systems problematic. In addition, these systems can be commercially used to provide power and heating or cooling in off the grid type applications. These commercialapplications might be as extensive as military applications.
