Research abstract

Military telemetry applications frequently choose between one of two frequency bands [1435-1525 MHz (L-Band) and 2200-2390 MHz (S-Band)]. The systems available today are limited to operation in only one band for each piece of hardware purchased. Aproduct that could cover all the bands in this frequency range with one set of hardware, and that can transmit using a number of modulation formats would be a significant improvement over current systems. The Advanced Multband Multimode Programmable Transceiver (AMMPT) is proposed. This system will be multi-band so it can work in the L and S bands and in-between. To assure continued availability, the device will be designed to work from 1395 MHz to 2485MHz, so the same boards can be sold into the medical, GMSK, and general telemetry markets. The system will be multimode by supporting PCM, FSK, QPSK, SQPSK, and Multi-h CPM modulation formats. In addition to the transmit capability, the device willprovide for two-way communications to further increase the versatility of the system. The benefits of a transceiver are the ability for protocol handshaking for more reliable transmission of data, and the ability for dynamic re-programmability. It willtransmit at up to 10 Watts. The AMMPT can be used on the dozens to hundreds of tests per day at each the various military test ranges. It can also be used to telemeter data from operational manned and unmanned aircraft. The Navy and Army can also benefit from this deviceproviding information between ships, buoys, soldiers, vehicles, and around facilities. The FCC recently opened two new medial bands at 1395-1400 and 1429-1432 MHz. This will allow the one-watt AMMPT module to be used for medical devices. By opening up the bandwidth to 2485 MHz., the AMMPT can cover the Instrumentation, Scientific, andMedical (ISM) band to be used for robotics control; and human and animal monitoring of all kinds, for example
