Research abstract

76299-Extensive research efforts are required to drive down the cost and increase the reliability of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) for widespread use as an alternative energy technology. SOFCs are multi-layer structures that must withstand up to 1000oF and operate reliably for thousands of hours. These stringent requirements place unique demands on the materials used in SOFCs. As new SOFC materials and components are developed, advanced metrology tools will be required to perform failure analysis, structural model validation, and quality control. This project will develop a high-resolution, three-dimensional, x-ray tomographic inspection system for the non-destructive structural characterization of SOFC components. The system will identify cracks and interfacial delaminations, determine porosity distributions, and perform small area defect characterization. Phase I will: (1) build a prototype X-ray imaging system optimized for imaging SOFCs; (2) acquire two-dimensional x-ray projection images of a SOFC sample; (3) perform a three-dimensional tomographic reconstruction of a SOFC sample; and (4) use the three-dimensional data as feedback for SOFC model validation. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The advanced metrology system should have wide application in SOFC research for model validation, and new component and material development. In addition, manufacturers of SOFC components could employ the system for quality control and failure analysis.
