Research abstract
Not Available The successful development of this small diameter diesel engine enables a new family of military and commercial products. The proposal is based on the successful Phase I N98-112 project work performed by ColTec, Inc. The engine package is 4.600 inches in diameter, 15 inches long and is expected to produce 7-10 hp at sea level. Fuel efficiency is expected to be lower than .500 lb/hp-hr. Two opposed rotors form four pumping chambers to create two combustion events per revolution. A Technical Profile is in place and ColTec is in communications with the 'FASM' missile supplier to insure this engine meets all design requirements. The design and analysis work will be completed in the first half of the Phase II program, and hardware prototyping will occur in the second half. The University of Louisville is participating in the development activity. ColTec has access to the supplier network of a major diesel engine manufacturer. This access provides important information to help get the design completed and to get ready for production. A marketing plan is on place that involves three different market segments. A private sector investor has contributed $188,000 to the program and ColTec is pursuing 'Fast Track status.
