Research abstract

Enemy forces can be crippled quickly at the beginning of a war by separating the enemies command and control structure from its combat forces and other elements of its defensive network. A false target generator has the potential to saturate or tie up an enemies air defense net and increase survivability of our own airborne assets. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is an optimum candidate for a decoy payload in support of a Suppression of Enemy Air Defense (SEAD) mission. The primary technical objective is to design an electronic decoy UAV payload capable of simulating multiple false targets that exhibit sufficient fidelity to deceive sophisticated radars. The phase I research and design effort will result in established perfomance requirements and a preliminary design of the electronic decoy payload. The design will be modeled to study its performance against a variety of threat emitters. Tradeoffs will be studied by means of qualified results from computer analysis and simulation. The design will be modified according to data obtained and lessons learned from the simulation. The final phase I design will be the basis for development of a brassboard demonstration model in phase II. The brassboard system will undergo extensive laboratory testing and mock-up testing. The phase II design will be modeled as in phase I, but will also be "flown" in dynamic engagement scenarios in the Lockheed Sanders Modeling Laboratory.
