Research abstract

79817 Although U.S. coal reserves are large enough to ensure energy security for the U.S. for several centuries, dependence on foreign natural gas and oil continues to grow because technologies for producing power with these fuels have an economic advantage over coal-based integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology. Yet, IGCC technology is a highly efficient and environmentally friendly means for producing electricity, and a simplified gasification process, combined with lower capital costs, would have a significant impact on its adoption by the power industry. Currently, gasification technology relies on exceptionally severe operating conditions that require specialized and costly equipment and construction materials, which represents approximately 30% of an IGCC¿s capital cost. Catalytic gasification could significantly reduce the severity of the operating conditions and the cost of gasification. This project will develop a catalyst, which, in addition to being highly active for gasification, will be resistant to deactivation caused by reaction with coal impurities, a problem that has plagued previous attempts. Phase I will demonstrate a novel catalytic gasification process based on a stable and active gasification catalyst. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The catalytic gasification process should make the conversion of coal and other carbonaceous fuels into electricity an extremely economically attractive technology. In addition to being cost competitive, this technology can also remove virtually all the particulates, nitrogen and sulfur and >90% of the mercury making it environmentally friendly.
