Research abstract

External intensity modulators based on the electroabsorption principle has potential in increased bandwidth, modulation depth and hence RF efficiency through device structure design optimization. These performance gains can be obtained without serious trade-off among the important characteristics because there are enough independent device parameters for adjustments. MOCVD regrowth technique will be used to produce modulator structures which have reduced device capacitance. Custom multiple quantum wells will be designed to increase slope efficiency and bandwidth.
